Full Description

A post medieval sea bank is visible as an earthwork, on aerial photographs taken in 1945, just to the south of where Martlesham Creek branches off the main channel of the River Deben. The bank is around 1.5 km in length and runs from TM 26614717 to TM 27514676. (S1) The 1st and 2nd edition Ordnance Survey 25" maps of circa 1884 and 1904 depict a bank in this position suggesting that the flood defence is of Post Medieval or earlier date (S2) (S3).
