Full Description

A Post Medieval sea bank is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1946, on the western side of the River Deben in Martlesham and Waldringfield parishes. The bank is around 1.2 km in length and runs roughly north to south from TM 27684662 to TM 28094564. (S1) A bank is depicted in this position on the 1st and 2nd edition Ordnance Survey 25" maps of circa 1884 (S2) and 1904 (S3) and the southern portion of the bank is also likely to be the bank depicted on the estate plan of Martlesham from 1734. The flood defence is therefore likely to be of Post Medieval date, constructed before 1734. (S4)
