Full Description

A Post Medieval sea bank is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1945, running from Stonner Point to Shottisham Creek on the eastern side of the River Deben. The bank is roughly 2.1 km in length and runs from TM 29234475 in the north to TM 30034303 in the south. Another bank is visible running for 283m east to west from TM 29984341 to TM 30274343, inland of the main bank. This bank runs at a right angle to the main bank and is not directly joined to it. This bank appears to be roughly aligned with the course of Shottisham Creek to the south. (S1) A bank is depicted in the same position as the main bank on the 1st and 2nd Ordnance Survey 25" maps of circa 1884 and 1904, suggesting that this part of the flood defence is of Post Medieval or earlier date. The shorter stretch of bank is not depicted on either of the maps and therefore may be of more recent date, although its appearance does not support this suggestion. (S2) (S3)
