Full Description

A World War II military emplacement of unknown function is visible as a number of earthworks and structures on aerial photographs, centred on TM 29454833 on Sutton Walks. To the north of the road the site consists of two nissen huts and another small structure, centred on TM 29424841, four possible concrete rectangular surfaces centred on TM 29404844 and circular feature, possibly a spigot mortar site, centred on TM 39394847. A narrow trench is also visible running on a north-south alignment just to the west of the anti-glider ditch. There are also two trenches running parallel to the road at TM 29254832 and TM 29314836. On the southern side of the road a substantial trench and associated bank are visible centred on TM 29474828. The feature is v-shaped and roughly 265m in length and two small structures, possibly buildings, are visible in the ditch at TM 29404830 and TM 29464829. Three short parallel trenches are visible just to the north of the large v-shaped trench and another circular feature is visible at TM 29414838. The function of these features is unclear but the large v-shaped ditch cuts the anti-glider ditches and it may be related to the bombing range further to the south. (S1) (S2) (S3)
