Monument record SUT 057 - Hogg Earthworks; Sutton Hoo (PMed)

Series of connected field boundaries with part ?trackways on N & W sides. Cut by 2nd World War anti-glider ditches. Part excavated during 1980s. Consisting of small rectangular fields of less than 1 hectare and larger fields of circa 4 hectare. Also `Hogg earthworks' to SW - L shaped. Claimed as prehistoric (?) on (S1). Further details in Research Committee bulletins. Area includes ring ditch, SUT 058, finds scatters SUT 46-48 and Sutton Hoo scheduled area, SUT 004.

A possible Post Medieval field system is visible on aerial photographs as a series of earthworks and soil marks, centred on TM 28944837 to the south of Sutton Hoo. The field system consists of adjoined rectilinear enclosures, many of which are visible as earthworks until the 1970s, when most of area is taken into arable cultivation. The enclosures are formed by a series of banks running north to south and east to west, forming rectilinear enclosures that vary in size from 120m by 70m to 220m by 170m. The alignment of the banks changes direction slightly towards the eastern end of the field system, with the banks becoming curvilinear and less regular, such as the one centred on TM 29244856. This may reflect a slightly different phase within the field system. A number of short banks, around 20m to 30m in length are visible distributed across the area of earthworks. Some, like those at TM 28404827 and TM 28444824 appear to be aligned on the earthen banks of the field system whilst others, like the one at TM 28734838, appear to have no relationship with the field system. In a number of the banks a central ditch is visible once the feature has been ploughed out, suggesting perhaps a central fence line. (S2-S10) The bank to the far east of the field system at TM 29494858 is visible as a field boundary on the 1st and 2nd edition Ordnance Survey maps of circa 1884 and 1904, suggesting a Post Medieval date for that section of the field system at least and the nature of the rest of the field system seems to suggest a possible Post Medieval date.
