Full Description

A Post-Medieval causeway is visible on aerial photographs as cropmarks and earthworks, centred on TM 24663508. The causeway is visible as an earthwork bank circa 5m wide, that runs for 187m from circa TM 24663499 to TM 14673518, flanked by ditches approximately 2m wide and roughly 160m long. The causeway appears to have been constructred to improve travel to and access across the reclaimed land to the east of Shotley. There is no evidence for a causeway on either the 1st or 2nd edition Ordnance Survey maps of 1884 and 1904. A Post-Medieval date therefore seems probable for the causeway.(S1-3).
