Full Description

A World War II pillbox, command-post trench, slit trenches and weapons pits are visible as structures and earthworks on aerial photographs, centred on circa TM47126273. The pillbox is visible on an aerial photograph from 1940 (S1), but the trenches do not appear until 1941 (S2), by which time the pillbox appears to have been camouflaged, possibly by earthworks and vegetation. The largest trench is shaped like 3 arms of a swastika, and is centred on TM47106284. This has been interpreted as a command post, a location from which local military activities are co-ordinated (S3). The trenches are still visible in 1946 (S4), but have been filled and ploughed by 1955 (S5). The pillbox is still visible on oblique photographs from 1982 (S6), and it is marked on the OS base map.
