Full Description
A sea bank of probable Post Medieval date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, centred on TM467925907. In total the bank is circa 1.8km in length. It runs for circa 900m from its southern terminal at circa TM46775835 to TM46895924, where it turns west and runs inland for a further 900m along the southern side of Thorpeness Meare, to terminate with an abrupt dogleg at circa TM46245952. The sea bank is marked on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of 1884, which suggests a Post Medieval date for its construction (S1-S3). The sea defences in this area appear to have undergone a number of phases of remodelling, and this bank connects with the remains of an earlier seabank at circa TM46755897. For more details of this see ADB 059.
