Full Description
An area of second world war anti-aircraft ditches is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs from 1941 onwards, centred on TM46665913. This area was laid out at some time before December 1941, and is composed of long thin ditches, on average around 100 to 150m in length and 2 to 3m wide, bordered by circular dumps of spoil around 3 to 4m in diameter, arranged in a chess board pattern of squares. They were intended to prevent enemy aircraft from landing on the open coastal ground. Some of the ditches in this area were incorporated into a land drainage system, and consequently they are visible on aerial photographs for many years after the war. (S1-S3).
