Full Description

Structures that made up the camp of a World War II Heavy Anti-aircraft battery site are visible on aerial photographs from 1945, centred roughly on TM45785837 (S1). By October 1945 a number of the camp structures have been dismantled and the guns have been removed, although the remains of a holdfast may be visible on one of the gun emplacements. The emplacements themselves appear to be simply areas of hardstanding that were probably reinforced with sandbags during active service, suggesting that this may have been an emergency battery. Additional protection for the site was provided by the strongpoints to the east of the site (see ADB 066 and ADB 067). A further late World War II Heavy Anti-aircraft battery, probably a DIVER site, is visible approximately 500m to the south. The footprints of some of the camp structures are still visible in aerial photographs of 1953 and 1955 (S2-3).
Site of a Second World War heavy anti aircraft (Diver) battery in the Diver Strip south-east of Maplestead Farm. It was armed with four 3.7-inch Mark IIc guns equipped with Predictor BTL, and Radar AA No.3 Mark V when it was deployed here on 10th October 1944, and was manned by 424 Battery of 138 Anti Aircraft Artillery Regiment. It formed part of 5 Heavy Anti Aircraft Brigade deployment (S4).
