Full Description

A World War II barrage balloon site is visible as a structure at Pewitt Hill, Felixstowe (TM 28763390) on aerial photographs taken in 1944. The site consists of a central octagonal concrete platform surrounded by a circle of concrete tethering points. Outside the circle there are a number of other possible tethering points as well as a small square structure, around 4m by 4m, which has a blast wall at the entrance and is roofless and another small rectangular concrete platform, possibly a hard standing for an earlier structure. Across the road to the west of the site, at TM 287333394, another possible concrete platform is visible, partially overgrown. It appears to have similar dimensions to the central octagonal platform of the barrage balloon site but it may be unrelated. (S1) (S2) (S3)
