Full Description
An area of World War II minefield is visible on aerial photographs of 1941, located on Crag Path, Aldeburgh, at circa TM46535662 (S1). The minefield is located immediately adjacent to Aldeburgh's lifeboat station, and formed part of the anti-invasion coastal defences in this area. To allow the lifeboats to launch, the lifeboat station was one of the few areas along the Suffolk coast where the anti-invasion coastal defences did not run along the waters edge. Instead the defences formed a heavily protected enclave on the beach, surrounded by beach scaffolding and anti-tank cubes (see ARG 051, ADB 154). The minefield is an additional component in this area. This stretch is approximately 30m long and 7m wide, but further minefields continue to the south (see ADB 124). It is not visible in 1945 photography, and was probably quickly removed at the end of the war (S2).
