Monument record ADB 128 - A World War II pillbox and slit trenches on the beach.

A probable World War II pillbox and slit trenches are visible as a structure and earthworks on aerial photographs, located on the beach at Aldeburgh at circa TM46505626. The pillbox is first visible as a structure on aerial photographs of 1940 (S1). The photographs are not very clear, but the structure is set against the road on the higher ground above high tide. The roof of the probable pillbox appears to not be flat, which may suggest it may be disguised as a chalet with a false gable roof. The slit trenches are first visible in 1941 photography, located approximately 5m to the north of the pillbox (S2). They are S shaped, about 7m long, and separated by a gap of about 4m. They are centred on circa TM46505626 and TM46505627. The pillbox is also visible in photographs of October 1945, apparently without a false roof, but the slit trenches have been filled. The pillbox has been removed by 1952 (S3).
