Full Description
Two possible World War II weapons pits or bomb craters are visible as earthworks on Aldeburgh Marshes, on aerial photographs from 1943 onwards (S1). They are located at circa TM45115619 and circa TM45145602. Both are roughly circular in shape, the first roughly 5m in diameter, the second about 6m. There does not appear to be a large amount of spoil surrounding either feature, which may suggest they were deliberately constructed as weapons pits or anti-aircraft gunposts, despite their slightly large size. However, due to the scale of the images, the 1943 photographs on which they are first visible do not show the features very clearly. Photographs from 1945 also do not show any upcast suggestive of an explosion, but it is possible that any spoil that may have been present may have eroded after at least two years on open ground and that they are in fact bomb craters (S2).
