Monument record SNP 087 - Post Medieval flood defences on the northern bank of the River Alde, Snape.

A Post Medieval sea bank is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs from 1943 onwards, centred on TM39035764 in Snape parish (S1). In total the bank is about 2km long, extending from circa TM38365759 in the west to circa TM40095758 in the east. It appears to be made up of four connected sections that are divided by a now disused railway line and Snape bridge. From 1859 to 1960, the Great Eastern Railway, Snape branch, crossed the river Alde at circa TM390015760 to supply Snape Maltings with raw materials for it's Malting process. It used roughly 115m of the sea bank as a railway embankment, from circa TM38925771 to TM39005762. Approximately 190m to the east the sea banks abut Snape bridge, recorded separately as SNP 036 (S2-3).
