Full Description

A World War II military site is visible as a number of structures centred on TM 22123632 at Pear Tree Farm, Shotley on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s. The site consists of a rectangular 'Type 23' pillbox located at TM 22003630 to the south-west of the farm, away from the main road. It is half-open and half roofed with the open half to the east. Another structure is located to the east of the pillbox at TM 22123632. This structure is about 6m square and open roofed. Its function is not clear. A number of buildings located next to the road may also be part of the site as it is possible that they have camouflaged roofs, but they have not been mapped. Other features may also be visible in the hedgeline to the south of the square structure. Again these have not been mapped as it is difficult to tell whether they might have a military origin. The rectangular pillbox is still depicted, in part, on the modern base map. (S1) (S2) (S3)
See SLY 006 for the Later Prehistoric or Roman field system and SLY 117 for the nearby World War II pillbox.

To the SE of the track leading from the B1456 road and Pear Tree Farm, NW of Shotley. Rectangular concrete pillbox (type 23) - faces SW. Has one crenellated wall with entrance on the same side. One square chamber is open to the sky with an AA gun mounting pole (S3).
