Full Description

A Post Medieval sand pit is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs taken from the 1940s onwards, centred on TM 22693700 to the east of Redhouse Plantation in Shotley parish. The pit is rectilinear in shape and measures roughly 35m by 30m. (S1) (S2) (S3) A sand pit is depicted in this position on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey 25" map of circa 1884, although a much larger pit is visible on the aerial photographs than is depicted on the map.
