Full Description
A probably Post-Medieval quarry pit in Iken parish is visible on aerial photographs from 1943 onwards, centred on circa TM39865566 (S1). It is irregularly, almost kidney shaped, about 100m in length and around 35m across at its widest point. It is marked on both the first and second edition Ordnance Survey maps of circa 1884 and 1904 (S2, S3). However, the first edition of 1884 has depicts trees growing within the area of the pit, therefore it has probably passed out of use by this time. The pit is still visible on photographs of 1972, and a dashed line appears to define its area on the current Ordnance Survey base map (S4).
