Full Description

A possible sea bank or causeway of unknown date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken from the 1940s onwards, on reclaimed land to the north-east of Crane's Hill, close to the River Orwell in Shotley, centred on TM 24643632. The curvilinear bank is approximately 135m in length and around 10m wide. Its location close to the River Orwell could indicate that the bank is either a causeway across the marshy ground or a stretch of relict sea bank. (S1) (S2) (S3)
