Full Description

Probable trackways or field boundaries of unknown date are visible as cropmarks of ditches on aerial photographs to the north of Wade's Lane in Chelmondiston and Shotley parishes. The cropmarks include a double-ditched linear feature which may be a trackway, centred on TM 22173680, and another double-ditched linear feature, centred on TM 22033684, which may also be a trackway, although as one moves eastwards the more northerly ditch turns through 90 degrees to head north, whilst the more southerly ditch continues on its original course. The ditches appear to be of a different nature to those created by the Post Medieval field boundaries recorded on the 1st Edition 25" Ordnance Survey map of circa 1884, which also appear on the photographs. The ditches discussed above are, however, visible on a very similar alignment to the Post Medieval features. (S1) (S2) (S3)
