Monument record FEX 211 - World War II anti-invasion defences.

World War II anti-invasion defences are visible as structures on aerial photographs taken from April 1944 onwards, surrounding Landguard Fort on Landguard Point, Felixstowe. The defences consist of lines of anti-tank cubes and barbed wire obstructions encircling the peninsular. The cubes begin at TM 28293172 to the south of the fort itself and discontinuously follow the coast on the western side of the point until TM28223128. A gap is visible in the line of cubes before they continue up the eastern side of the point for 1.36km, terminating at TM 28933239. A stretch of barbed wire is visible running from the east side of the point to the west, demarcating an area at the extreme southern end of the point. There are numerous gaps in the line of cubes on the eastern side of the peninsular which correspond with gaps in the inner defensive line (see FEX 210). From TM 28923238 the defences continue running northwards, inland away from the beach, in the form of lengths of barbed wire obstruction, which continue for roughly 555m following the line of the road until TM29053287 where the barbed wire runs eastwards towards the coast for another 93m. Barbed wire is also visible at the other side of the road, running up to Carr Road. Another stretch of barbed wire is visible following the line of Carr Road from TM 28593289 eastwards for 320m before turning south for another 130m and terminating at TM 28903281. Within the line of anti-invasion defences two pillboxes are visible, a square one at TM 28823222 and a half-open half-roofed Type 23 pillbox at TM 28513162. The anti-tank cubes and barbed wire would have formed part of the anti-invasion defences that protected Landguard Point during World War II. See FEX 251 for the inner ring of defences.
