Full Description

World War II practice trenches are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken from July 1944 onwards, centred on TM 28493183 to the east of Landguard Fort, Felixstowe. The trenches vary from 2m to 25m in length are all arranged parallel to the beach itself. They were constructed between April 1944 and July 1944. (S1) (S2) It is likely that these trenches were created for practice purposes by the troops that were stationed at Landguard Fort prior to embarkation for the second phase of the D-Day landings. The trenches are positioned opposite gaps in the anti-invasion defences (see FEX 251 and FEX 211) where tracks can be seen running up from the beach. It is likely that the troops were practising beach landings whilst under fire or occupying their time before embarkation. (S3)
