Full Description

A 19th century coastal gun battery, designed for practice purposes, is visible as a series of structures on aerial photographs taken from 1944 onwards, located on Landguard Point at TM 28443170. The battery consists of four circular concrete features, presumably gun emplacements, each measuring approximately 7m in diameter and arranged in a row following the line of the coast. There are also two rectangular concrete features at the southern end of the row, measuring 6m by 3.5m and 5m by 3m. These may be foundations for some type of small buildings. (S1) (S2) (S3) (S4) In his book "Fortifications of East Anglia", Peter Kent depicts the circular features on a sketch map of the fort's defences as they existed 1945 and marks them as a "64-pdr RML practice battery". (S5) The use of RML (rifled muzzle-loading) guns suggests that the battery was probably constructed during the 19th century. (S6)
