Full Description
A Post Medieval landing point or pier is visible as an earthwork with possible associated structures, extending into the River Orwell close to Collimer Point, Shotley, centred on TM 24563703, on aerial photographs taken from the 1940s onwards . The feature consists of an earthen or stone pier roughly 80m long by 10m wide, extending from the seabank, at a right-angle. Some associated structures, possibly constructed of timber, are visible at either end of the pier. (S1) (S2) (S3) The feature is marked as a "boat hard" on both the 1st and 2nd edition Ordnance Survey 25" maps of circa 1884 and 1904 suggesting that it was still in use at this time and that it was probably constructed in the late Post Medieval period.
