Monument record SUE 055 - A possible World War II anti-invasion defence obstruction in the River Alde at Westrow Reach

Three structures, possibly posts, buoys or mines are visible on aerial photographs of 1941, crossing the Sudbourne and Aldeburgh parish boundary in the channel of the River Alde at Westrow Reach, centred on circa TM45995557 (S1, S2). The structures are too small to be measurable with any accuracy but appear to be 2m or less in diameter and are spaced about 45m apart. From north to south they can be seen running from circa TM45995561 to TM45995552. It is possible that they held a suspended wire or similar barrier to prevent access inland through the River Alde. It is likely that they formed this barrier with further structures to be seen in the river channel to the south (see SUE 056).
