Full Description
A group of World War II bomb craters are visible on aerial photographs of Sudbourne marshes from 1943 and 1945 centred on circa TM43975340 (S1, S2). The craters are circa 5 to 8m in diameter and can be seen covering an area of about 13.5 hectares. It is likely that more craters than have been mapped were present, but the scale and quality of the aerial photographs available means that some smaller craters might have been omitted. Given the proximity of Sudbourne battle school to this area (see SUE 063), it is possible that many of the craters on Sudbourne marshes might be a result of training exercises as well as enemy bombing.
