Monument record SUE 097 - Structures of Post Medieval and World War II date on the Shingle beach near Lantern Marshes, Sudbourne parish

Structures of unknown function are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Lantern Marshes, located on the shingle beach at circa TM45555145, Sudbourne parish. On photographs of 1940 onwards, a structure approximately 4m x 5m in size can be seen at circ aTM45525141 (S1, S2). A structure can be seen in this location marked on the first and second edition Ordnance Survey maps of circa 1884 and 1904, and it may also correspond with structures marked in this location on a map of circa 1800 (S3-5). The function of this structure is unknown, but its location suggests that it might have a function related to maritime activities. The map evidence suggests a Post Medieval date for its construction. A number of new structures can be seen on aerial photographs from 1943 and 1945, located immediately to the east and circa 50m to the north of the earlier building (S6, S7). The purposes of these is also unclear from the photographs, but it is likely that they are related to the military activity in this area.
