Full Description

A rectangular enclosure and two structures probably of modern date are visible as structures on aerial photographs, located in the inter-tidal zone of the River Ore to the south of Orford Quay, at circa TM42374925. Neither the enclosure or the structures are marked on the first or second edition Ordnance Survey maps, suggesting that they post-date 1904 (S1, S2). They are visible on the earliest available low-tide photographs for this area, dating from 1944 and 1945, which might suggest a military function relating to anti-invasion defence, but it is not possible to be sure from the photographs alone(S3-4). Alternatively, they may simply be related to the local fishing industry. The enclosure is still visible on aerial photographs from the 1970s, although the structures have been removed, and is marked on the Ordnance Survey base map as an area of standing water (S5).
