Full Description
A number of possible temporary military structures of World War II date are visible on aerial photographs to the south-west of Orford, centred on circa TM41164923. The majority of the structures appear to be tents roughly 7 x 13m in size, although there may be a more substantial structure circa 8 x 15m in size to the south of the camp, and a circular feature circa 7m in diameter to the west may be a water storage tank. They are first visible on aerial photographs of September 1945, and are still visible in October of that year. There may be further associated structures in the area but due to the scale and quality of the available photographs it is not possible to be sure. There are a number of groups of such tents in the area that resemble the tents of Sudbourne 'battle school' located in and around the grounds of Sudbourne Hall, with which they may be associated which are (see SUE 063). They may be intended to resemble haystacks as part of a camouflage strategy. (see ORF 097, ORF 098).
