Full Description

A number of slit trenches and possible temporary structures are visible as earthworks and structures on aerial photographs in an area of Second World War military activity in and around High Gedgrave Broom in Gedgrave parish, centred on circa TM40134853. The slit trenches are generally zig-zag in shape, the longest being circa 30 metres in length. Further slit trenches may be present but the quality of the photographs prevents their identification. The temporary structure within High Gedgrave Broom resembles structures visible at the military camp at Sudbourne Hall. The camps in the grounds of Sudbourne Hall have not been mapped as they lies outside the area of this survey, but see SUE 063 for more information. This structure has been removed by September 1945 and can be seen to have been built on a hardened surface. Its demolition is possibly related to the construction of the extensive camp associated with the Heavy Anti-aircraft Artillery site to the east, sometime between May 1944 and September 1945 (see GED 026). Further tents can be seen to the north of High Gedgrave Broom, associated with a possible Light Machine Gun emplacement. (S1-2)
