Full Description

A Heavy Anti-aircraft Artilery battery of World War II date is visible on aerial photographs as a series of structures centred on circa TM39994777, in Gedgrave Parish. The main body of the camp is made up of circa 25 structures, mostly Nissen Hut type, aligned on a section of hardened track at circa TM39974791. Nine tent structures, about 12 x 6 metres in size are visible to the north of the main camp, close to the south-western end of Gedgrave Road. They probably provided additional accomodation for the battery. A further circa 275 metres of trackway extended to the southern edge of Gedgrave Marshes where four gun emplacements were arranged in a shallow arc along one edge of a triangular arrangment of trackway about 90 metres to a side. Two further Nissen Hut type structures, probably the command centre and magazine, are visible at the opposite side of the triangle. A series of surface marks on the grass in this area suggests that further temporary structures had previously been positioned around the gun emplacements. The battery is not visible on aerial photographs of May 1944 and, and along with two other nearby batteries appears to be part of a late phase of battery construction on the Suffolk Coast (S2)(see GED 020, GED 026). Despite the curved arc of gun emplacements, more normally associated with Anti-aircraft batteries, this site may be part of the DIVER strip redeployment that took place after September 1944. (S1, S2)
Site of Second World War heavy anti aircraft Diver battery in the Diver Strip at Gedgrave Marshes. It was armed with four 3.7-inch Mark IIc guns equipped with Predictor BTL, and Radar AA No.3 Mark V when it was deployed here on 24th November 1944, and was manned by 440 Battery of the Independent Anti Aircraft Artillery Regiment. It formed part of 102 Heavy Anti Aircraft Brigade deployment (S3).
