Full Description

A possible relict sea bank or causeway of medieval or post-medieval date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs on Gedgrave Marshes, Gedgrave parish, centred on circa TM40344752. The bank is on average 9 metres wide and runs for approximately 940 metres from circa TM40074781 where the land begins to rise, to circa TM40764721 where it is seperated from the existing sea wall (see GED 039) by a drainage ditch. The feature is not marked as a bank on either the first or second edition Ordnance Survey maps, but is marked as a footpath, suggesting that it has been used as a causeway at least from the Post-Medieval period. This is one of a number of possible relict banks or causeways that cross Gedgrave marsh in this area that may represent activity related to early, possible late medieval phases of land reclamation (see GED 029, 031-032).
