Full Description
A number of slightly irregular pits, possibly the remains of pits built for the cultivation of shellfish, are visible on aerial photographs as earthwork features cut in to the saltmarsh on Havergate Island at circa TM41944823. They are between 5 x 3m and 10 x 5m in size and are arranged along a channel that runs parrallel to the sea wall. It is not possible to date these features with any confidence from the aerial photographs, but their alignment along the sea wall and their apparently heavily silted up condition by 1942 suggests that they were created in the Post Medieval period. There are further pits in this area, but it is not possible to be sure from the aerial photographs whether they are naturally occuring or man made. (S1-S3)
