Monument record BOY 052 - A possible Post Medieval causeway.

A possible Medieval or Post Medieval causeway is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork running across Boyton Marshes, centred on circa TM38994672. The feature is visible as a bank, on average 12-15m wide and about 365m long, running from circa TM38824689 at its north west end to circa TM39114669 in the south east. The north west end of the bank is only about 100m distant from the former site of Frogs Hall as marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of circa 1884, while the south east end corresponds with a footpath leading from Boyton hall onto the marsh, also marked on the 1884 first edition. It is likely that many such causeways inter-connected across the marsh and were in use before and after the marsh was enclosed. Two shorter stretches of bank are visible to the south, continuing the line of the bank, and they may be part of the original causeway. (S1-S3)
