Full Description

A sea bank of probable Post Medieval date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, centred on circa TM38024508 in Hollesley parish. At its northern and southern ends it abuts two earlier seabanks that represent earlier phases of land reclamation, BOY 059 and HLY 063. The bank is circa 700m long, although it is slightly narrower than those banks it connects with, being on average 5m wide. This bank extends the area of reclaimed land by circa 1.5ha, superseding substantial lengths of the earlier banks, particulalry those that run inland. This bank is marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of circa 1884, and therefore is at least Post Medieval in date. However, this sequence of bank building and land reclamation closely resembles that seen further to the north in Sudbourne parish (in particular see SUE 086) and this phase of sea bank construction could be significantly later in date than those it abuts.
