Full Description
Two narrow causeways of probable Post Medieval date are visible on aerial photographs as earthworks to the south of Chillesford Lodge, Chillesford parish, at circa TM398508. The causeways or footpaths radiate from a single point to the south of Chillesford Lodge at circa TM39875088, with one branch heading towards the Butley River across the saltmarsh to the south-west of the Lodge and the other heading roughly east-south-east towards Bullockshead Carr and Newton Farm. The western path is visible for circa 200m, the eastern length for about 170m before bifucating into two lengths of about 90m. Both causeways or footpaths are marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of circa 1884, and both probably represent part of a much more extensive network of causeways and footpaths that provided access to the reclaimed land that by 1943 has begun to be been broken up and interrupted, particularly by ploughing.
