Full Description
A series of small rectangular pits are visible as earthworks cut into the saltmarsh on the west bank of the Butley River, at circa TM39205002, Butley parish. The pits are on average 4 x 2m in size, and do not appear to be inter-connected or to be linked to a water source. On 1945 photography they appear to be relatively well defined, suggesting that they are modern in date, but it is not possible to be sure and some may date to the Post-Medieval period. Post 1945, the number of pits increases, suggesting that their function may relate to maintenance of the sea banks rather than food production.
