Full Description
A military camp of World War II date is visible on aerial photographs as a complex of structures centred on circa TM39465297 in Chillesford Parish, about 500m to the north of Hill Farm, within what is now the area of Tunstall Forest. The complex is composed of six or seven structures, a mix of huts, hemispherical 'nissen-hut' type shelters and other structures of unknown construction, laid out along a track about 55m long. Five or six of the buildings to the west of the track appear to be accomodation or operational buildings. The structures to the north-east of the track may include a mast or pylon structure. The function of this base or camp is unclear from the photographs. (S1-S2).
Present condition unknown but buildings no longer mapped so presumably destroyed.
December 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The military camp described above is situated on the edge of, and probably forms part of, an extensive area of military training activity (SUE 133), which in turn forms part of Orford Battle Training Area (ORF 137).
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 9th December 2015.
