Full Description

A probable anti-aircraft searchlight battery of World War II date can be seen on aerial photographs of 1943 onwards, as earthworks and an associated structure centred on circa TM37095164, about 300m to the north-east of Wantisden Corner, Wantisden parish (S1-S2). The battery is composed of two large circular searchlight emplacements about 12m in diameter, enclosed by earthwork banks about 4m wide. To the north of the emplacements, a slit trench and a structure about 7 x 12m in size, possibly a pillbox or blockhouse but more probably a generator building, can be seen cutting into an earthwork that forms part of the surrounding system of embanked fields or enclosures (see WNN 016). Further small military features, such as slit trenches or weapons pits may be located to the south of the battery near Orford Road, but due to the quality of the available prints it is not possible to be sure. Further Military activity can be seen further to the north in what is probably a military training area (see WNN 019).
