Full Description

A possible World War II strongpoint is visible on aerial photographs of 1939 to 1945 as earthworks and structures centred on circa TM37185206, Wantisden parish (S1, S2). The possible strongpoint is composed of two elements; firstly an embanked slit trench about 175m long, centred on circa TM37215200, with a smaller embanked trench of circa 18m long about 30m to the south-east; secondly a possible barbed wire enclosure centred on circa 37155217 of about 1 hectare in area. The enclosure is irregular, almost floriform in shape, and appears to have been removed by September 1945. The precise purpose of this strongpoint is not clear from the aerial photographs alone, but it appears to be related to wider training activities in the general area. In addition, from the number of vehicle tracks visible to the north in September 1945, the area was probably used for Armoured Fighting vehicle (or tank) training.
