Full Description

A probable Post Medieval road is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, running north to south along Erwarton Ness from TM 21283355 to TM 21253321. The 1st Edition Ordnance Survey 25" map of 1881 (S1) shows that the road must have gone out of use prior to that date as the modern landscape does not differ from that shown in 1881. The road appears to have been an early route of the modern track heading across Erwarton Ness to the coast, possibly to a quay earlier in date than that shown on (S1) to which the modern track heads (See ARW 047). (S2) (S3) A possible boat hard may be visible protruding from the shore at the end of the road but as it cannot be confidently interpreted as a man-made feature it has not been mapped. (S4)
