Full Description

The remains of Post Medieval field boundaries are visible as cropmarks of ditches on aerial photographs, centred on TM 21053403 in the large field located between Shop Corner and Ness Farm in Arwarton parish. The field boundaries are visible as substantial linear and slightly curvilinear ditches which mark where hedge boundaries have been grubbed out. These field boundaries, particularly those centred around TM 21373439, TM 21043420 and TM 21253397, appear to fit into the Post Medieval pattern of land division as shown on the Ordnance Survey 1st and 2nd edition 25" maps of 1881 and circa 1904. (S1) (S2) There are also possible Post Medieval features located towards the eastern side of the field, including two quarries, and an associated road, visible as cropmarks centred on TM 21403413 and also an area of linear ditches to the far south of the site centred on TM 20983349 which may be related to modern agricultural practices or drainage. There may be other Post Medieval features in this area but the palimpsest of Later Prehistoric / Roman features (see ARW 014) means the cropmarks are difficult to decipher. (S3-S9)
