Full Description

A number of probable World War II air raid shelters and trenches are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1946, centred on TM 16413539 around the Royal Hospital School at Holbrook. Eight possible air raid shelters are visible around the northern edge of the Royal Hospital School site. They consists of a rectangular mound of around 12m to14m in length with two small trenches, generally located at either end of one of the longer sides of the mound. These trenches have been interpreted as entrances down into the shelters. The mound at TM 16353527 is of a slightly different form and may have had a different function to the probable air raid shelters. A group of four slit trenches, measuring from 20m to 28m in length are visible centred on TM 16373512 further to the south, within the grounds of the school. The function of these trenches is unclear. (S1)
