Full Description

A probable late 19th or early 20th century jetty and possible associated sub circular wooden structure are visible on aerial photographs in the inter-tidal zone of Holbrook Bay, Stutton, centred on TM 16183395. The jetty consists of two parallel rows of wooden posts which protrude into the bay at right-angles to the shore. The jetty is at least 90m in length. It is depicted on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey 25" map of 1904 (S1) but not on the 1st edition 25" map of circa 1884 (S2), suggesting it was constructed between these dates. Another wooden structure is visible approximately halfway along the jetty on the western side. The structure consists of a horse-shoe shaped arrangement of wooden posts forming a circular enclosure measuring 4.5m by 3.5m with an opening to the north, facing the shore. The wooden structure abuts the jetty and it is possible that the western row of jetty posts may even deviate from its course to avoid the wooden structure. This suggests that the wooden horse-shore shaped structure could be contemporary with or earlier than the jetty. (S3-S7)
