Full Description

A Roman salt production site or 'saltern' is visible as a soilmark or 'red hill' on aerial photographs, centred on TM 35234301 to the east of Cedar Farm in Alderton parish. The 'red hill' covers an area roughly 60m by 50m and is located at the edge of reclaimed land. (S1-S3) The interpretation of the site as a 'red hill' was confirmed during a site visit by Linzi Everett of Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service on the 4th March 2004. The site was described as a clear spread rich in pottery and briquetage. (S4) The full finds report was not available at the time the record was compiled. (S5)
