Full Description

The remains of Post Medieval or Modern firing ranges are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of Landguard Point, centred on TM 28603228 (smaller polygon). Remains of the butts from which the soldiers would have fired are visible on Landguard Common and the targets would have been placed on the banks that are visible to the south near the sea so that any shots missing the targets would have not endangered anyone. (S1) (S2) The targets were linked by a tramway and these banks are still depicted on the modern base map. There were originally three ranges in the group and they were constructed some time between 1890 and 1903 and are depicted in detail on the 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey 25" map of 1903 (larger polygon) (S3).
