Full Description

A length of probable relict sea wall is visible on aerial photographs of 1997 as an earthwork centred on circa TM48327208, Dunwich parish (S1). The bank is circa 75m long and between 2 to 4m wide. The location of this earthwork in an area of heavily drained land on a stretch of coast severely affected by erosion suggests that this feature may have been part of a failed reclamation attempt, the remainder of which has been lost to erosion. An isolated drain flanks the western side of the bank. On the second edition Ordnance Survey map of circa 1904, this drain is connected to the larger drainage system and the fact that it respects the bank suggests it was a substantial feature in the post-medieval period (S2).
