Full Description

A ring ditch of probable late prehistoric date is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, centred on circa TM27994040 to the north of Kirton village, Kirton parish. The ring-ditch is approximately 15 metres in diameter, the ditch itself 1.5 to 2 metres wide. It is possible that the ring ditch marks the remains of a barrow of Bronze Age date, but the proximity of the site to possible Iron Age field systems (KIR 002) and the possibly Iron Age D-shaped enclosure KIR 051 provides a later context for the site. A curvilinear ditch to the south-east of the ring-ditch may be the remains of a field boundary associated with this feature (see S1 & S2) . Unfortunately this is only visible on one run of photographs which do not have suitable control to allow this cropmark to be plotted. (S1-2)
