Full Description

Evidence of military training activities can be seen on Bixley Heath and the adjacent golf course, as earthworks and structures centred on circa TM200431, Ipswich and Rushmere St Andew Parishes. Second World War Bomb craters and smaller impact craters too numerous to fully transcribe cover an area of circa 35 hectares. In this area extensive slit trenches, presumably dug for training purposes can also be seen, at TM200430. Two pillboxes and associated earthworks are also visible at TM195431 and TM196433. Earlier earthworks, probably dating to the First World War can also be seen at circa TM203431 and TM204433 (see RMA 024). Many of these features have now been destroyed or obscured by the expansion of neighbouring housing estates. (S1, S2)
