Full Description

A broad 'L' shaped cropmark visible on aerial photographs, centred on circa TM 360900, may mark the remains of a road or Fort of Roman date, Mettingham parish. The cropmark, possibly visible in germinating crops, is visible as a pale line between 15 and 17 metres wide, potentially forming over a compressed surface or remains of an earthwork bank. The cropmark turns a corner immediately to the north of Post Office Cottages. This cropmark is not visible on any other photographs available to the survey but the presence of numerous finds of Roman date in this area, although 2nd century in date, and the proximity of the line of the Roman road recorded in MTT 014 circa 800 metres to the south-west, should encourage further investigations to be carried out in this area.
